World Press Freedom Day

Bleak picture for Tunisian media

The Observatory for the Freedom of Press, Publishing and Creation (OLPEC) is celebrating World Press Freedom Day this year against the backdrop of a worsening free expression situation in Tunisia.

In fact, despite intense government rhetoric in its favour, free expression remains strictly controlled and censorship is on the rise.

And while the Tunisian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, authorities seem to have little difficulty getting around the law to violate this right at every turn. The following are only a few illustrations: more......

Omar Mestiri, editor of the on-line journal Kalima has been summoned to appear in court on August 2, 2007 on charges of defamation brought by Mohamed Baccar under articles 42, 50, 53, 72 and 78 of the Press Code.

 

The charges arise from an  article (http://www.kalimatunisie.com/article.php?id=289 ) published on September 5, 2006 in Kalima which gave information about the surprising rehabilitation of Baccar, a lawyer close to those in power, who was  disbarred for having been convicted on several counts of  perjury and fraud .more......

Culture Ministry's review board censors new play: "Corps-otages" (Khamsoun), a new play by Jalila Baccar and Fadhel Jaibi, is censored in Tunisia


The Ministry of Culture's review board has announced the censorship of playwright Jalila Baccar's new work, "Corps-otages" ("Captive Bodies"), directed by Fadhel Jaibi. Upsurge of assaults on the freedom of the press

OLPEC is alerting the public about burgeoning acts of censorship that are striking the Tunisian and foreign press in Tunisia. Following the confiscation at news kiosks of three Tunisian periodicals at the end of last month, the following assaults took place:  On February 7, the authorities banned the circulation of number 257 of the magazine "Al Maraa Al Youm", edited in Dubai.
